Five Methods for Troubleshooting Engine Idle Speed After RV Modification

Time: 2024-11-28 Source: Author: Caleb
1. What to do if the idle speed is unstable?

Unstable idle speed is manifested as: engine vibration at idle speed and uneven speed. The reasons are: blockage of idle air holes, poor operation of idle device, weak spark of individual cylinder spark plugs, loose seal of individual valves, leakage of intake manifold, ignition time too early or too late, improper idle speed adjustment, etc. When the engine idle speed is unstable, adjust the idle speed first. If the fault cannot be eliminated after the idle speed adjustment, please check whether the idle speed measurement hole and idle air measurement hole are blocked. If the measurement hole is blocked, clean it with gasoline or acetone and blow it through with compressed air; if the measurement hole is not blocked, stabilize the engine speed at a certain speed and observe whether the middle and lower gaskets of the intake manifold or carburetor are leaking. If there is leakage, it can be eliminated by tightening the screws or adding or subtracting gaskets. If the unstable idle speed is accompanied by a decrease in engine power, the working condition of the spark plug, the valve sealing performance and the ignition timing should be further checked, and repaired and adjusted if necessary.

2. How to identify the idle speed difference?

The engine should be able to run evenly within the speed range of 300-500 r/min for normal operation. If the low stable speed of the engine exceeds this speed range, or the engine stalls and the speed is unstable within this speed range, there is no low speed or idle speed difference. When the idle speed is poor, it can be divided into idle flameout, unstable idle and high idle speed according to the fault characteristics. After the engine starts, it runs well from low speed to high speed, but it stalls immediately after releasing the accelerator pedal, or it stalls after unstable operation, which is an idle flameout fault. If the engine idle speed is unstable and the exhaust pipe makes a "sudden" sound, it is generally an idle speed unstable fault. If the low stable speed of the engine is higher than the specified range and cannot be reduced, it is an idle speed too high or no idle speed fault.

3. How to adjust the idle speed?

The adjustment of the idle speed must be carried out under normal conditions, such as normal engine temperature, appropriate valve clearance, normal ignition system, good sealing of each pipeline, full opening of throttle valve, tight closing of throttle valve, etc. When adjusting, first unscrew the throttle valve opening adjustment screw to make the engine reach a low stable speed. Then use a screwdriver to screw in the idle speed adjustment screw. When the engine is about to stop, slowly unscrew the idle speed adjustment screw to make the engine run smoothly and reach high speed. Then unscrew the throttle valve opening adjustment screw to reduce the engine speed to a low speed. Then adjust the idle speed adjustment screw to increase the engine speed. This process is repeated until the throttle valve opening is small and the engine runs at a low stable speed. Finally, increase the speed and suddenly close the throttle so that the engine is still turning and will not stall.

4. What about idling?

When the engine stalls at idle, adjust the idle speed according to the actual situation. After adjustment, if the fault disappears, it means that the idle screw is improperly adjusted. After adjustment, if the fault does not disappear, open the throttle a little wider to keep the engine running. Use cotton yarn or paper to check whether the carburetor and intake manifold gasket are leaking. If there is no leakage, remove the idle speed measurement hole for inspection, blow through the idle oil channel at the same time, and then retest. If the fault disappears, it means that the idle speed measurement hole and the idle oil channel are blocked. For carburetors equipped with idle cut-off valves, check whether the idle cut-off valve electromagnetic circuit is normal. If the idle throttle port is blocked due to abnormal electromagnetic circuit, repair the idle cut-off valve.

5. What should I do if the idle speed is too high?

When the engine idle speed is too high, start the engine first, and then manually control the throttle arm to close the throttle valve. If the idle speed is normal, the throttle tension spring is too soft and the tension spring should be replaced. If manually closing the throttle valve does not work, check whether the throttle shaft is loose or whether the throttle valve is closed tightly. If the throttle valve is not closed tightly or the throttle shaft is loose, repair it; if the throttle valve is normal, check whether there is a slight leak under the throttle valve. If so, the leak should be eliminated. If it is not suitable, please further adjust the idle speed until the appropriate idle speed is reached.
